Hardwood Flooring Installed to Its Acclimation Schedule, Not a Job-Site Deadline
We install and refinish solid and engineered hardwood across the GTA following the moisture-content and acclimation requirements the manufacturer publishes, because rushing that step is the leading cause of the gapping and cupping we're called to repair.

What Governs a Hardwood Install That Lasts Through GTA Winters
Hardwood is a hygroscopic material — it expands and contracts with moisture content, and Southern Ontario's swing from humid summers to dry, heated winters puts real stress on that movement. Getting the install right means planning for that swing from day one.
Moisture content matching
We measure the wood's moisture content and the subfloor's, and won't install until the two are within the range the manufacturer specifies. A mismatch here is the single most predictable cause of post-install gapping.
Full acclimation period
Boards are conditioned on site for the period the species and construction require, not a token day or two to keep a schedule.
Fastening pattern by subfloor type
Nail-down, glue-down, or floating installation is selected based on the subfloor — plywood, concrete, or existing flooring — and fastened at the spacing the manufacturer's warranty requires.
Refinishing assessment
For existing floors, we check remaining wear-layer or solid-wood thickness before sanding, since over-sanding a floor that's already been refinished multiple times can expose fasteners or thin the boards beyond safe limits.

Gaps That Open Every January Point to a Moisture Mismatch at Installation
If your hardwood floor develops visible gaps between boards every winter and closes back up by summer, that's a sign the wood's moisture content wasn't properly matched to the room's long-term humidity range before installation, or the acclimation period was cut short.
We Match Moisture Content Before Installation and Explain the Seasonal Range to Expect
Our installation process includes moisture readings on both the wood and subfloor, and we'll tell you upfront what seasonal movement is normal for your specific home's heating and humidity setup versus what would indicate a problem.
Installation and Refinishing Process
Separate paths for new installation and refinishing existing floors.
- 1
Moisture and subfloor assessment
We test subfloor moisture and flatness, and for refinishing jobs, assess remaining board thickness.
- 2
Acclimation
For new installs, boards condition on site for the manufacturer-specified period before fastening begins.
- 3
Installation or sanding
New floors are fastened to spec; existing floors are sanded in stages to remove the old finish without over-thinning the wood.
- 4
Finish application
Stain and finish coats are applied and cured for the recommended dry time between coats.
- 5
Final inspection
We check for consistent sheen, board alignment, and proper perimeter expansion gaps before walkthrough.

Hardwood Flooring Questions
How long should hardwood acclimate before installation?
It depends on the moisture differential between the wood as delivered and the room's target humidity, which is why we measure rather than quote a fixed number of days. Engineered products generally need less time than solid hardwood.
Is some seasonal gapping between boards normal in the GTA?
Yes, a modest amount of gap widening in winter and closing in summer is normal given how much indoor humidity swings with heating season, provided the wood was properly acclimated and moisture-matched at installation. Excessive gapping points to a mismatch at the outset.
How many times can a hardwood floor be refinished?
It depends on the remaining wear-layer thickness for engineered wood or the total board thickness for solid wood. We measure before sanding to confirm there's enough material left to refinish safely without exposing fasteners.
Can you install hardwood over a concrete slab?
Yes, with the right vapour barrier and moisture testing to confirm the slab is within an acceptable range, or with engineered hardwood suited to below-grade or on-grade installation.
What's the difference between nail-down and floating hardwood installation?
Nail-down fastens each board to a wood subfloor and suits most main-floor installations, while floating installation isn't fastened to the subfloor at all and can work over concrete or existing flooring, though it responds differently to moisture and requires its own expansion gap calculation.
